- LOADING SMOOTHY.COM TO USE THE REXXCOM CHARACTERS
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- There are two ways to load the REXXCOM character set. To view an already
- completed ANSI graphic, type SMOOTHY (+ Enter) and view the ANSI. To work with
- THEDRAW install the character set as a TSR (memory resident) program by typing
- SMOOTHY I (+ Enter). Uninstall with SMOOTHY U. On some systems, if you
- repeatedly install, uninstall and re-install SMOOTHY.COM, the system may
- encounter a "keyboard lockup" which is harmless but annoying since it requires
- resetting or restarting the computer.
-
- USING THE NEW CHARACTERS ON BULLETIN BOARD SERVICES
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- If you are a member of a BBS which supports ANSI graphics in its message area,
- try uploading a REXXCOM-character ANSI graphic as a "message." Only members
- with SMOOTHY installed on their own computers will see the graphic properly.
- Some terminal programs may require SMOOTHY to be installed with the "I" option;
- others do not need this option.
-
- Some of the REXXCOM characters may not be accepted by the BBS software. When
- this occurs the offending character is deleted, causing all characters to its
- right to be moved to the left. If a graphic contains a few deleted characters,
- the picture may appear so distorted you will not want to leave it online. Do
- some testing by leaving ANSI "messages" to yourself. In testing the characters
- on a TBBS system we discovered the characters work fine if the graphic is
- displayed in an ANSI graphics display rather than as a "message." Some
- characters may appear to be deleted when viewed by the sysop on the BBS's
- computer, but they will be displayed correctly to members logging on if those
- members have SMOOTHY loaded ON THEIR OWN COMPUTERS. This latter point is
- important.
-
- WORKING WITH AN ANSI GRAPHIC TO LEARN TO USE THE NEW CHARACTERS
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- The fireplace scene from the NEWART "demo" is enclosed as FIRECATS.ANS. Load
- it into THEDRAW after first installing SMOOTHY, and play around with it to
- become familiar with using the new characters. Press your INS key, place the
- cursor over part of the graphic, and separate the characters horizontally with
- the space bar. Then move right one space with the right arrow key and again
- press the space bar. Perform vertical separation with ALT-I. In this way you
- may disassemble any portions of the graphic to learn how we assembled the
- characters to create the picture. In the demonstration you saw this done with
- the two solid triangles. Do it with the gift packages, the cats, the
- stockings, etc. Using the new characters may seem tricky at first, but soon
- you will learn to assemble them into shapes which will amaze you.
-
- If you can not get the effect you want, try reversing the foreground/background
- colors and then try totally different characters. This is what we had to do
- with the ears in FIRECATS.ANS. You will probably be surprised when you see how
- the ears of the cats were formed - we did not use the tiny "triangles" which
- you may think were used.
-
- ADDITIONAL CHARACTERS
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Type the following symbols with SMOOTHY in effect, and you will have 6 more
- characters to use ~ # ^ | { }
-

-
- MONITOR SCAN LINE
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- When SMOOTHY is loaded, if you have a VGA system the scan line is reset to
- emulate EGA. This is done to provide the best possible blending of adjacent
- extended characters. After you are done using the extended characters you may
- resume the VGA scan line by running VGA.COM (included).
-
- DEFAULT CHARACTERS
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Typing "mode co80" (without the quotation marks) and pressing the Enter key
- will return your system to its default text/character set, unless you have
- installed SMOOTHY with the "I" option. In the latter case, uninstall with "U"
- by typing SMOOTHY U and pressing the Enter key.
-
- OTHER PROGRAMS
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Related REXXCOM programs are available from BBSs and CompuServe. Get
- NEWS-1.EXE and AFONT4.EXE for easy use of the jumbo fonts and more. On
- CompuServe type GO IBMAPP and then use REXXCOM as your keyword. Other great
- REXXCOM programs may be found by accessing the IBM File Finder. Type GO IBMFF.
-
- The ANSI drawing program THEDRAW, published by TheSoft Programming Services,
- may be found in a shareware version on many BBSs, in shareware catalogs and on
- the CompuServe network. At the time of this writing, Version 3.3 of THEDRAW is
- available for download from CompuServe under the filename TDRW33.ZIP in the
- ZENITH Forum, Lib. 8. It may be located with the keyword ANSI. (REXXCOM
- Systems has no affiliation with the publisher of THEDRAW.)
-
- SHAREWARE - NOT FREEWARE
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- This copyrighted set of files, including NEWART.EXE and SMOOTHY.COM, is
- shareware; it is not free. It may be freely posted on BBSs, listed in
- shareware catalogs, copied and distributed to friends, as long as the complete
- set of files is kept together and unchanged. If you like it and use it, you
- should register it by sending $15 to REXXCOM Systems with a completed
- registration form which may be obtained by printing the file REG.FRM.
-
- NON-COMMERCIAL USE
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Note to sysops of non-commercial/non-institutional systems: If you operate an
- ANSI compatible system, you are encouraged to use this and other REXXCOM
- programs to make ultra-professional screens for your BBS or LAN. As noted
- above, BBS members (and LAN terminal operators) must have their own copies of
- SMOOTHY.COM for installation in order to "decode" the jumbo fonts and graphics
- on their computers. Do some testing to discover which characters are not
- supported by your system. As mentioned earlier, the host computer's monitor
- may show an erroneous picture. Check the results on a user's computer to be
- sure of what is really getting through.
-
- THE RULE FOR COMMERCIAL USE
- ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
- Operators of commercial, institutional or educational systems must pay a
- licensing fee for the use of these and other REXXCOM materials. Please write
- for details.
